Topwater bass fishing is probably one of the most exciting techniques in the summer and spring seasons. Topwater lures are strictly floaters, meaning that all their action is on the surface and completely visible to the angler.
Topwater bass fishing is probably one of the most exciting techniques in the summer and spring seasons. Topwater lures are strictly floaters, meaning that all their action is on the surface and completely visible to the angler. This also means that the strike is completely visible to the angler, which sets topwater bass fishing apart from all other techniques.
Topwater baits typically perform better in warm, calm, shallow waters during late spring throughout summer into early fall. The prime time to throw a topwater bait is during low light conditions. Early morning, late evening and especially on overcast days. I always keep a topwater bait tied on and on standby during the summer months, because as soon as the sun falls behind the clouds, the bass will feed on the surface. Shady spots, under docks or bridges, overhangs, etc. are good areas to temp them with a topwater.
I have several topwater baits that have proven to be very effective for me here in Arkansas, and they just might work for you just as well. Tie one on and find out!
Topwater Baits for Bass Fishing
Heddon Super Spook
“The Heddon Super Spook has been a staple of the serious angler for years. The colors have changed and even the hooks but one thing remains constant, it puts fish in the boat. With the addition of newer fish catching colors and premium finishes it has only gotten better. The loud rattles attract more attention to the bait and its walk the dog motion then seals the deal. To assure a landing the Heddon Super Spook is equipped with super-sharp Excalibur Rotating Treble Hooks.” Livewelltales.com

The Lucky Craft Sammy 128 is the number one choice of people throughout the world and its’ continued success is a result of the quality materials used in production. IMA Skimmer
“A large part of the Skimmer’s action is caused on the ending movement of each zig or zag as the tail-weighted back end of the ima Skimmer stirs the water wildly causing a large boil. So every time that the Skimmer zigs or zags left or right, the final movement of the weighted tail stirs the surface into a large boil, and the Skimmer slips out barely ahead of the boil, just like a desperate baitfish narrowly escaping a bass’s lunge. The Skimmer’s action then becomes a non-stop series of ever-widening boils emanating behind it. It’s like having a school of surface-feeding bass on the scene, all boiling the surface behind the ima Skimmer’s tail. If there’s ever anything that gets a non-committal bass to bite, it is other bass feeding in front of it – and that’s the competitive feeding cue that the Skimmer’s tail-stirring movement sends out to all bass within range of sensing the surface-feeding boils trailing out behind the Skimmer.” Livewelltales.com
